Biography

Dr. Charles Arul is a seasoned Communication Designer by profession, an artist and designer by practice, and a musician by passion. A graduate in Visual Communication from the College of Fine Arts, Chennai, he holds a postgraduate degree, an M.Phil. in Communication, and a Ph.D. in Visual Communication.

With over a decade of industry experience, his enduring curiosity and commitment to learning led him into academia. Over the past 29 years, he has been shaping young creative minds in various premier institutions such as DJ Academy of Design, Karunya University, Bishop Appasamy College, and Hindusthan College of Arts and Science under Bharathiar University, where he also served as Head of the Department.

Charles’s early fascination with music and electronics evolved into expertise in sound design, which later expanded into studio and spatial design. His creative practice spans multiple domains of Communication Design — including filmmaking, animation, music production, photography, graphic design, and visual arts.

As a practicing artist, he has showcased his paintings in several renowned art galleries, reflecting his deep engagement with visual culture. Beyond teaching, he has contributed to academia as an External Jury Member, Examiner, Academic Scrutinizer, Industrial Expert in Curriculum Development, and External Board of Studies Member in various institutions.

His strong and sustained association with the Tamil film industry continues to enrich his teaching practice, offering students valuable industry exposure and opportunities for professional growth.
